A shared milestone for Afar tourism
Project Green Consulting has finalized a comprehensive package of tourism development and promotional assignments for Afar, bringing together long-term planning, destination branding, digital communication, and visitor information. Financed by Samara University and the Afar National Regional State Tourism Bureau, the project provides practical tools to help the region communicate its tourism offer and support sustainable sector development.
The completion marks an important milestone in a shared effort to strengthen Afar’s visibility and translate its tourism potential into wider opportunities for communities and businesses. Samara University announced the official handover of the project outputs to the Tourism Bureau on 21 September 2026.

A complete set of development and promotional tools
The completed assignments include:
Afar’s 10-Year Tourism Development Strategy, 2026–2035: A strategic framework for the development and promotion of the region’s tourism sector.
The Visit Afar official tourism portal: A digital gateway presenting Afar’s history, culture, natural attractions, destinations, and tourism opportunities.
A new regional tourism brand identity: A shared visual identity to strengthen recognition of Afar across tourism communications.
Visit Afar Magazine: A publication showcasing the region’s tourism assets and destination stories.
Visit Afar Tourist Map: A practical reference introducing major destinations and attractions.
Promotional destination flyers: Focused materials presenting Afar’s nature, culture, and history, including the Danakil landscape and Erta Ale.
Together, these outputs connect the planning of tourism development with the way visitors discover and explore a destination. Their value lies in how they can be used collectively by tourism institutions, businesses, communities, and development partners.

A long-term strategy and a dedicated digital gateway
The ten-year strategy provides a longer planning horizon for the sector. A shared strategic framework can help stakeholders coordinate their efforts, assess priorities, and maintain continuity across individual projects. As it is put into practice, it can also provide a basis for discussing investment needs, service improvements, destination management, and the responsible use of tourism resources.
The Visit Afar portal supports this work by giving the region a dedicated digital presence. For prospective visitors, access to clear destination information is an important step between initial curiosity and planning a journey. A maintained website can help travellers understand the range of experiences available and help tourism businesses present Afar more effectively to their customers.

One identity across destination communications
The regional brand identity adds consistency to that communication. When the website, magazine, map, and flyers share a recognizable identity, they can reinforce one another across online searches, exhibitions, visitor information points, and business presentations. This gives tourism stakeholders a common foundation for telling Afar’s story while retaining the distinct character of individual destinations and communities.
The magazine and destination flyers allow that story to be explored in greater depth. They can introduce readers to experiences beyond the attractions they already know, provide useful material for travel professionals, and support destination promotion in both digital and printed formats. Used thoughtfully, they can encourage interest in a broader range of places and help operators develop more varied itineraries.
The tourist map complements these materials by helping visitors understand where attractions are located in relation to one another. This can support early itinerary planning and conversations with local guides and tour operators. Better awareness of the region’s wider tourism offer may encourage longer visits and more opportunities to engage local accommodation, transport, guiding, food, and other services.
Local opportunity and responsible implementation
For communities, the longer-term opportunity is participation in the tourism economy. Improved promotion can help create demand, but lasting local benefits also depend on service quality, skills, access to markets, and meaningful involvement in tourism decisions. The completed tools provide a foundation on which institutions and businesses can build those connections.
Responsible implementation will be equally important. Tourism growth should respect Afar’s cultural heritage, community priorities, and natural environments. Keeping visitor information current, encouraging respectful behaviour, and linking promotion with sound destination management will help protect the qualities that make the region distinctive.

From completed assignments to lasting value
Project Green Consulting thanks Samara University and the Afar National Regional State Tourism Bureau for financing the project and entrusting the firm with these assignments. With the work finalized, the focus now turns to using, maintaining, and developing these resources so they contribute to a more visible, coordinated, and sustainable tourism sector in Afar.
